The map

The map is the whole app. There is no title bar and no bottom tab bar — the map fills the screen, and everything else floats on top of it so that nothing covers terrain unnecessarily.

What is on screen

ControlWhereWhat it does
MenuTop leftContacts, routes, offline maps, settings — everything that is not the map.
Monitoring pillTop, beside the menuAppears when people are sharing with you. Summarises who needs attention and opens the roster.
Control railRight edgeRecentre on your position, and the map layers sheet.
Outing cardBottomYour own outing: its state, elapsed time, and Start / Stop.
SOSBottomAlways reachable while an outing is running.

The split is deliberate: other people are at the top, you are at the bottom. If you are out there yourself and following friends at the same time, you need to tell your own status from theirs at a glance.

All the floating controls are sized to be usable with gloves on.

Your own position

A blue marker, with an accuracy circle around it when the fix is uncertain. If it has not appeared, the phone has not got a GPS fix yet — under trees or against a cliff that can take a minute. Indoors it may never arrive.

Tap the recentre button on the control rail to bring the map back to you after panning around.

Map layers

Open the layers sheet from the control rail.

LayerWhat it adds
Outdoor / topographicThe base map: contour lines, paths, refuges, terrain shading. This is the map the app is built around.
SkiPistes, lifts and ski-touring routes, drawn over the base map.
Your routesGPX routes from your library, each in the colour you gave it. See GPX routes and tracks.

Your choices are remembered between sessions.

People sharing with you are not a layer

Pins for people who are sharing with you are always drawn — they are not something you can switch off by accident. If you hide them from the map, an SOS or an overdue outing is still shown, and the app tells you that pins are hidden. Turning off a layer must never be able to quietly end your watch over somebody.

The map works offline

Map tiles are served by Alpik's own tile servers, and areas you have downloaded are used first. In a valley with no signal, a downloaded area behaves exactly as it does at home; an area you did not download will be blank.

Download the areas you need before you leave — see Offline maps.

Attribution

The map data is © OpenStreetMap contributors, and the attribution is shown on the map as the licence requires. It is deliberately small and out of the way, but it is there.
